Whenever people ask me which herbs they should take to maintain their health, my answer is usually a resounding… it depends. However, there is one herb I universally recommend for its broad spectrum treasure trove of health benefits: Triphala!
It’s interesting to note that while herbalism fell out of favor in America about 70+ years ago (a story for another time), the tradition never died in many parts of the world. In many Eastern cultures, taking daily herbs is as familiar as eating breakfast. They don’t wait until they’re sick to start taking herbs; it’s done for maintenance and longevity. These cultures have a keen focus on cultivating health. So, even if you are not dealing with a specific health issue, triphala is a fantastic addition to your daily routine.
What is Triphala
Triphala isn’t actually a single herb but a combination of three fruits: amla (Emblica officinalis), haritaki (Terminalia chebula), and bibhitaki (Terminalia belerica). This famous formula has been a mainstay tonic in Ayurveda (Ancient Eastern Medicine) for thousands of years. It’s also a staple in my practice, included in most, if not all, of my protocols.
This herbal combination is unique as it contains all five flavors, making it the most universally balanced medicine for all body types. Some of its other strengths include being mild, well-tolerated, affordable, and easy to find.
Why Take Triphala Daily
Triphala is known to benefit every tissue and organ in your body. I wasn’t kidding when I said it offers a broad spectrum of health benefits. Its perfect balance makes it so.
Digestion
Triphala is a powerful aid for digestion, known for its gentle laxative properties that promote regular bowel movements without causing dependency. It acts as a digestive tonic, enhancing the digestive fire (Agni) and improving nutrient absorption. Additionally, it soothes the digestive tract and supports overall gastrointestinal health.
Liver
Triphala supports liver health by promoting detoxification and aiding in the elimination of toxins, enhancing the liver’s natural cleansing processes. Its potent antioxidants protect liver cells from oxidative stress, while its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce inflammation, benefiting conditions such as fatty liver disease and hepatitis.
Eyes
Triphala is beneficial for eye health due to its high antioxidant content, which helps protect against oxidative stress and age-related vision issues. Its anti-inflammatory properties can reduce eye strain and irritation, while its nourishing qualities support overall ocular health and function.
Detoxing
Triphala is a renowned detoxifier, helping to cleanse the colon and eliminate toxins from the body. Its gentle laxative effect ensures regular bowel movements, aiding in the removal of waste. This detoxification process supports improved energy levels, clearer skin, and overall well-being.
Building
Triphala aids in building and rejuvenating tissues by enhancing digestion and nutrient absorption, ensuring that the body receives the essential nutrients it needs. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties promote cellular health and regeneration, contributing to the maintenance and repair of bodily tissues.
All Tissues
Triphala supports the health of all bodily tissues through its balanced formulation, which nourishes and revitalizes. Its ability to enhance digestion and detoxification ensures that nutrients are effectively absorbed and toxins are efficiently eliminated, promoting the optimal function of all tissues.
All Organs
Triphala benefits all organs by promoting systemic detoxification, reducing inflammation, and enhancing nutrient absorption. Its antioxidant properties protect organs from oxidative stress, while its balancing effect on all three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) ensures harmonious organ function and overall health.
Glandular Balance
Triphala helps maintain glandular balance by supporting the endocrine system’s function. Its detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties reduce stress on glands, while its ability to balance the three doshas promotes hormonal equilibrium. This holistic approach ensures that glands operate efficiently, contributing to overall well-being.
How to Take
I recommend taking triphala in capsule or pill form (unless you’re really brave like me and can take it as a powder; it is slightly cheaper that way, but many people don’t like the astringent flavor).
Maintenance: 1-2 grams daily
For laxative action: Up to 5 grams
Triphala can be taken any time of day, but traditionally it is taken in the evening to promote a nice bowel movement first thing in the morning. You can experiment with timing and find what works best for you!
Bonus Uses for Triphala
Eyewash
Triphala can be used as an eyewash to promote eye health and relieve eye strain. To make a triphala eyewash, simply mix one teaspoon of triphala powder with a cup of water and let it sit overnight. In the morning, strain the mixture to remove any sediment, and use the liquid to gently rinse your eyes. This can help soothe tired eyes, reduce inflammation, and maintain overall eye health.
Mouthwash
Triphala also serves as an excellent natural mouthwash. Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties can help maintain oral hygiene, reduce plaque buildup, and combat bad breath. To make a triphala mouthwash, dissolve half a teaspoon of triphala powder in a cup of warm water. Swish the mixture around in your mouth for a minute or two, then spit it out. Regular use can contribute to healthier gums and teeth.
