The spiritual side of healing
I’m not going to get all woo woo or religious on you, but I do want to talk about this very important often very overlooked aspect of healing. The spiritual side.
When we don’t feel with we turn to doctors, pills, procedures, maybe even food, and supplements, herbs, exercise and all the rest of the healing tools out there. But if you lack a a belief in something greater than yourself the healing you’re seeking may be elusive.
Spirituality comes in many forms, and the spiritual tools each person chooses are often unique and deeply personal. There is no one size fits all approach. Spirituality in the broad sense means something along the lines of seeking something greater than yourself, or believing in something greater than yourself. It helps us see the interconnectedness of our own mind, body & soul AND gives us our WHY and our purpose.
Healing or making big health changes are really challenging without a strong and compelling WHY.
Simply wanting to get better often times isn’t enough to actually get you better. You gotta dig deeper and find your great why. The thing that’s going to propel you forward even when things are challenging. The thing that makes your heart ache. Maybe it’s for your children, maybe you have some work to bring to the world. Maybe it’s your dog, or your love of nature. It can be anything… Anything that speaks directly to the core of who you are. Healing is hard, it takes strength and courage to walk the path. It takes perseverance and patience because their are many highs and many lows. Something must keep you going.
I see a lot of people get stuck. They get caught up searching for a thing to fix them. The one doctor, or protocol that makes it all go away. But the thing is we’re not a broken toy just waiting to get fixed, we’re a maker in our destiny. When we can get a little space we can see that we must turn inward and heal ourselves. Not to say that doctors, and pills and protocols aren’t helpful because of course they are. But those things don’t bring us back to whole. We must be involved in that process. Which is why this “spiritual” piece is crucial.
This spiritual piece can even help us shift the suffering we feel into grace. Instead of saying why is this happening to me, we can start to turn inward and explore what parts of our lives need our attention. What are the flags (our symptoms, and ailments) drawing us too. Where can we explore! There is peace and relief that come with understanding our wellness from a new perspective. One that allows us to grow from the challenges we face instead of identifying with them or becoming buried by them. When we dig deeper, and see the bigger picture, we cultivate an understanding. One that opens the healing energy of our heart and contributes to our healing.
The mother of all healing systems, Ayurveda, says:
All disease is spiritual in nature
and while that may sound esoteric or hard to swallow, it is a sentiment that holds a lot of freedom in the end.
Example Time:
A newly diagnosed Type II diabetic is trying to understand how this dis-ease state came to be. Upon taking a spiritual look, he realizes he turned to eating too many sweets because he wasn’t finding any sweetness in life itself. When he realizes this, he is able to work through what’s lacking in his life and conquer is reliance on treats. A critical step towards healing from this new diagnosis.
The Takeaway:
Now I recognize these concepts might not be easy to grasp and that’s okay! What I want you to take away from here today is:
-> Healing takes more than the pills and protocols.
->It takes a trust in something larger than yourself that you can surrender too.
->It takes courage to look deeper at the reasons you’ve landed where you have
->Tt takes compassion to not judge, but accept.
Walking a path of true healing Is not an easy task, and many people choose not to take it. But I promise you this path we speak of sets you free. It turns your suffering to grace and brings your true purpose to the forefront giving it all meaning.
If you’re struggling to understand your predicament you’re not alone. The only question now is how do you want to move forward?
With Love
