All of the leading causes of death in the United States are heartbreaking. Heartbreaking because they’re preventable. Because they reflect our current state of health. Because people are being robbed of their opportunities from industries that care about nothing but a bottom line. But this COD (cause of death) Is extra heart breaking as it holds a mirror up to the true state of not only our health, but our health system and it’s shortcomings.

 The Rise of ADEs

Drug-Related Adverse Events (ADEs) have become a leading Cause of Death in the United States. Hundreds of thousands of people die each year due to adverse drug reactions. Why?

Great question.

It starts with the increase in drugs being prescribed. Drug research is done on a ‘perfect scenario’ basis. We know in this crystalline scenario a drug will interact as expected. But that perfect scenario is not what we’re dealing with in this patient population. People are being prescribed pill after pill after pill, and we have nothing but theory to know how they will interact.

Our healthcare system is very disjointed. A patient could be seeing multiple doctors, each prescribing multiple drugs for various ailments and disease states. There’s no central oversight, no joining forces. Every doctor has their specialty, and that is the lane they stay in. As our rate of un-wellness is increasing, symptoms and disease states are too, leading to this increase in drug prescriptions and subsequent negative interactions.

As our health decreases, our medical spending increases.

As our health decreases, the amount of prescribed drugs increases.

As our health decreases, the amount of unnecessary deaths increases.

As our health decreases, the number of new drug approvals increases.

As our health decreases, so do our spirits.

Well, that’s a bummer.

Now we’re not only dying of all these chronic diseases; the drugs we have to treat these diseases are killing us too.

That’s a grim way of putting it. But it’s a grim situation, and one that is only going to get better if we talk about it.

What do we do about it? What can YOU do about it?

These are all signs of deeper systemic issues within our medical model. Unfortunately, there isn’t an easy fix. As our disease states grow, the complexity of managing them does too. The adverse drug interactions are going to continue unless we do something different.

First Steps

– Prevention is the Best Medicine: Take your health into your own hands and practice preventative medicine. Start with your diet & lifestyle, using food as medicine and finding daily movement to ensure your future stays bright and healthy.

– Herbal Medicine as Prevention: Many other countries focus on longevity; they take herbs even when they’re healthy instead of waiting until they are busted to start tending to things. There are many herbs out there used for longevity and continued health. We’ll talk about this more in upcoming posts!

– Shift Your Thinking: “There isn’t a pill for every Ill, but there is an Ill following every pill” – Dr. B.M. Hedge. If you are facing any sort of dis-ease state find practitioners who focus on root cause resolution, going deeper than just  symptoms level to help bring your body back into balance just like we do here!

– Advocate for Yourself: There is a place for us at the helm of our healthcare team. Ask questions, beef up your healthcare team with functional nutritionists, herbalists, ayurvedic practitioners and more! You deserve peak health, advocaate for yourself!

– Empowerment and Education: No matter where you are on your health journey, there is room for empowerment and education. You don’t have to go it alone; many experts have dedicated their lives to filling gaps in the healthcare system. Learn from them!

– Ancient Wisdom: And lastly, turn to Ancient Wisdom. Support ancient medical systems like Ayurveda, which have been in practice for over 5,000 years. Billions of people turn to these systems for a reason. These systems focus on prevention, and non-drug treatments even for serious or chronic illness. These systems can work right alongside your current treatments.

I don’t want you to leave this conversation feeling down or with your heart aching. I want you to leave it fired up to take control of your health and the health of your loved ones. I want you to get fired up to step up to the helm of your healing journey. I want YOU to know you have the biggest impact on your health outcomes. Our bodies are beautifully complex; when they’re hurting, it’s to help us understand a deeper wounding. Our surface signs, symptoms, and disease states are just screaming to us for their attention; let’s give it to them.
